Golden Globes Award is going green with eco-friendly party….

For the first time Hollywood environmentalists are throwing the first “green” Golden Globes awards party for celebrities next week. The Environmental Media Association (EMA) and Entertainment network will host this January 15 what they call a “Golden Green” party in Beverly Hills to mark the annual movie and television awards ceremony.

The party will serve organic food, use recycled paper decorations and furniture made of reclaimed woods. It will be set in a landscape of plants and flowers to promote awareness of the green issues while the group TreePeople will plant one tree for every attendee. The objective of the event is to create a party that unites talent and social awareness.

Going green is really the "in" thing nowadays that even Hollywodians adopted this concept. Since 2006 we have seen more and more corporations making their green commitments or have introduced their green product lines. And I would say this will continue.

The beauty and the challenge of this green revolution is how smart we are in seeing the difference between purely marketing strategy from real environmental commitment. Write Comment

Decorate this Christmas with a recycled touch!
Written by Hilda
Tuesday, 19 December 2006
Christmas celebration is never complete without gifts, Christmas carols, cards and what else the Christmas tree. We all surely had our childhood memories of decorating our own Christmas trees with our loved ones. Without a doubt we all prefer real Christmas trees over artificial Christmas trees. But have you ever thought of building your own one out of recycled materials and even decorating them with recycled ornaments? Well this is the idea that most of green sites that I have visited propose. A Christmas tree completely made of existing stuffs around his house: wire, old figurines, etc.

The Healing Power of Ginger

The belief in the healing power of plants dates back in the ancient times . People all over the world traditionally have relied on indigenous herbal plants for treating various ailments since time immemorial. In our garden or even in our kitchen we can find various medicinal plants that are often left out unnoticed.

Ginger (scientific name: Zingiber officinale) for example have found its place in the kitchen for it’s distinct flavour and aroma perfect for seafood and Asian dishes. But this plant is widely cultivated also for its medical powers. It’s roots and leaves when pounded and mixed with oil can be used as an antiseptic. But one recipe we can do with ginger that serves many purposes: anti-rheumatic drug, stimulant to relieve gas pain and sore throat is ginger brew (Salabat as we say in Philippines):

Ingredients
• 2-3 cups of water
• 8-10 thin slices of fresh ginger
• 1/2 cup brown muscovado sugar/ or fresh honey

Simmer ginger and sugar in water for about 30 minutes. Serve hot. You can adjust the strength of the tea by adding more ginger or more water depending on your preference.

Famous Filipino singers have confirmed that Ginger brew is one of their secret weapons in keeping their beautiful voices. So aspiring singers out there what are you waiting for…

The Green Revolution

You must have heard about million dollar webpage but how about the billion tree campaign?

Considering the growing concern about the global warming the United Nations Environment Programme has recently launched a worldwide tree planting campaign, "Plant for the Planet: a Billion Tree Campaign".

It is a simple and a handy attempt to save the world. Imagine that an adult tree can consume 12 kilograms of CO2 per annum and can produce enough oxygen for a family of 4 for a year. A hectare of forest thus can clean 6 tons of CO2 from the air. It is a worthwhile project proposed by the UNEP to commit ourselves through this campaign
(go check their site) http://www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign/

If only each one of us will pledge a tree, not that bad considering how many billion people we are on this earth. It’s about time we clean our own mess! What are you waiting for, let’s start the green revolution now and save our planet!

Healthy holiday organic cake!
Written by Hilda

Christmas is fast approaching. And on this festivity abundance of chocolates, candies, icing and of course foie gras: holiday eating can be extremely rough for our body system. And I thought it would be interesting to share this wonderful and healthful recipe inspired by the recipe book “Peaceful Cook” (a recipe book that affirms the importance of connecting with peace that dwells in all the kitchen).
Well as carrots are the perfect winter ingredient high in beta-carotenes here’s a simple organic cake recipe naturally sweetened and healthy.

INGREDIENTS:
• 11/2 cups organic sugar
• 4 organic eggs
• 1 cup organic canola or safflower oil
• 21/2 cups organic unbleached flour
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• 4 cups grated organic carrots
• 1 cup organic applesauce (optional)
• 1 cup chopped organic walnuts or pecans

Frosting
• 3 packages (8 oz each) organic cream cheese, room temperature
• 1 stick organic butter, 1/2 cup, softened
• 1 package (16 oz) organic confectioner's sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 2 cups chopped organic pecans (optional)

PROCEDURES:
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Prepare two 9" round cake pans by lightly brushing with melted butter or oil and dusting all sides with flour. Shake out excess flour and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, beat sugar and eggs together until fluffy. Stir in the oil. Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon. Stir the sifted ingredients into the egg mixture. Fold in the carrots, applesauce and nuts. Pour into prepared pans and bake 35-40 minutes, until done in the center. Invert on a cooling rack and cool completely before frosting.
To make the frosting, cream together first 4 ingredients and blend until smooth. Frost in between layers. Assemble cake and frost sides and top. Decorate sides with chopped pecans, if desired
Well I haven't tried it yet but once I did I will tell you how good it is. =)
