The concept of Fair Trade emanates from the reality that millions of people all over the world are suffering because of scrupulous and unfair trade practices. Everywhere trading relationship often ends up with exploitation, misery, child labor and the eventual loss of human beings’ identity. Fair trade however is more than just making trade fair. It guarantees fair remuneration, respect for human being and environment and refuses child labor. It also requires a long-term mutually beneficial partnership where both adult, children and the environment we live in are all respected and valued. It also demands for transparency in all aspects of trading.
Unfortunately, in the textile industry, Fair Trade principles are almost never implemented. The harsh conditions of garment workers are still rampant everywhere. Fair trade is a solution to their plight. Capalongas wants to show that it is possible to create a brand of stylish outwear that is also economically viable in supporting the development of a marginalised community in developing countries like Philippines. Beyond Fair Trade, Capalongas also wishes to develop and pay a tribute to the talents of the craftsmen while returning to the traditional means of production more respectful to men and society we live in.
