Raffle Ticket to Heaven PDF Print E-mail
It’s been more than 2 weeks now that the tragic incident that took the life of more than 70 people due to the stampede that happened in manila. I don’t intend to elaborate on this accident but somehow trying to analyze what lies beyond. Filipinos have special talent for entertaining themselves to forget and laughing out their miseries and problems. Watching television is but one of these: not alone for entertainment but also for making them dream. In fact, a scene of a crazy pack of fans camping out in front of stadiums for a concert or a match of their favourite theme is nothing so extraordinary. But these 30,000 people who lined up, slept, ate and literally camped out there weren’t there for their idols nor for the spectacle of the TV shows anniversary. They were there trying there chance to win 1 million pesos (euros), a house and lot, a jeepney package a lots of other prizes. In poverty stricken country luring people to come and watch their show is an easy thing. I myself have one time tried my luck to join in the competition organized by a TV station hoping to bag the 10,000 pesos cash prize on a competition of designing the smallest “Santa Claus3 out of grain of rice. I worked hard making and designing it with my sisters, we even need to borrow money from the neighbour to go to the studio. But of course we lost, there were so many people that our “Santa Claus” fell in the mob even before the judges could see it, still funny to remember. I believe that manipulating people to watch their show by luring them with cash prizes is foul play. Our government should better look into this matter seriously. Quoting from what a Filipino comedian just said is true: that for the souls of those who passed away due to this accident they don’t need a raffle ticket for their place in heaven. They just need to go straight ahead.
