Last Monday I had the occasion to profit the sun and the beautiful marina of Marseille because of the national seminar organized by the Nationals Poles of Resources Fashion Design of Marseille and Objects of Saint Etienne (poles nationaux de resources Design Mode –Marseille, et Objets- St Etienne). It was a three day seminar on the theme “Design, Fashion and Sustainable Development”. It was indeed interesting to see how essential and relevant it is to merge fashion and design with sustainable development. With our growing problems on environmental issues it is but high time that we integrate it in our day to day living. Key note speakers invited came from different field, there were: Isabele Quéhé founder of Ethical Fashion Show, Sakina M’sa an origine of Comores Island and a successful fashion designer in France, Herve Guetin, one of the guy behind Seyes Pullover, Alexandra Coiffe the director of Altheane, Helen Sarfati-Leduc of Yamana Association, Christian Le Guillou, inspector of Regional Pedagogie, Gael Guilloux, responsible for Eco-concept in Center of Design in Rhone Alpes, Jean-Marc Bachet director of Monoprix in Marseille who discussed about the eco-engagements of their company, Richard Montoro an eco-designer, Marine Peyre of Caravan and label +=+, Francoise Bres of Bleu de Cendre (natural and traditional dyeing) , Marie-Helene Wild a professor on BTS Fashion Design.
It is fascinating to see how differently participants reacted on each of these topics during the open forum discussions. One worth mentioning is the reaction on the “eco-designed” plastic packaging for salads of Monopix: why not just sell the salad as it is if it is really environmental friendly. But all in all it was a healthy and rich discussion. Another insight that personally inspired me was the one given by Sakina M’sa claiming that the fashion industry is now in revolution and if we want to change it we need to be inside. This event included also an invitation to see a play entitled “Bitter Tears” ( Les larmes amères de Petra von Kant » de Rainer Werner Fassbinder) which unfortunately I didn’t had the time to see.
To sum it up, the seminar was really worth it: I have learned a lot stuffs, validated some that I already knew, met interesting and nice people (special mention to Marie-jo and Rolande to whom I chatted a lot of time) and I will surely be there again next year. Congratulations to all the organizers (Eric, Odette) for a job well done!
